Boulders, Acorns, Grit and Oak

Often patients/clients find it hard to accept that the cause of their suffering will be some small piece of information, believing that to have had such a huge effect on them, that the cause must be something similarly huge and traumatic.
My favourite quote is “Out of tiny acorns, mighty oaks grow” * and use this in some way or another with almost every new person I see. It can though, on occasion, be difficult to get this across without sounding dismissive of the amount they have been suffering.
Given below is one of the explanations I often use, and it continues to be a useful and easily understandable way to get the information across.
