Conscious Interference

I’m having difficulty with one of my patients. She said right at the start that there were things that happened in her mid-teens that she did not want to talk about. It was clear that as her problem had started before this time in her life, it wouldn’t cause any difficulty with treatment, so I reassured her on this point and we got on with treatment.

But she just won’t relax! She goes along fine to begin with, but then as soon as I start my first question I can actually see her deliberately disturbing her relaxation in order to pay attention to what’s going on.

What can I do?
