Dealing With Memories

If a patient refers to a memory or exhibits some emotion at the end of a session but doesn’t want to discuss it, should the matter be dropped or is there any advantage in probing the matter further?

Question:  My patient sat up at the end of the treatment and was clearly experiencing some unwelcome emotion as a result of the information he had provided. He clearly did not want me to see he was upset and was very eager to leave.

I did not want to push him into speaking about something he was uncomfortable with, but wonder whether perhaps I should have done and whether there will be any effect on future sessions because of this.
