Failed IMR

Question:

Despite responding to well to the relaxation and all other techniques so far, I could not get any IMR from one patient.

I started in the usual way I do with all my patients, and then went on to give her even clearer instructions and explanations etc. I then tried the balloons tied to fingers, with lots and lots of imagery and detail. I worked hard on her distraction in case that was the problem – but all to no avail.

Afterwards, when I asked her how she felt about the session she said she thought it was so weird how her fingers were moving all by themselves – especially when the balloons pulled them up.

Unfortunately, I wasn’t seeing any of it. I don’t want to waste another session getting no information, what should I do next time?
