Protect From Pleasure

Have you ever had a patient who described a reason for a symptom as being say a protection from something pleasurable/positive/enjoyment/happiness? Was wondering how you would proceed from there…as usual, it is all about the wording because “the subconscious is doing its job then…” seems to make very little sense.

The quick answer is – 2 or 3 that I can remember and they were based on some kind of opinion that they didn’t deserve that enjoyment. But it’s such a good question, so let’s look into it in a more general way. (I’m going to assume a female patient for this, to save all the him/her/they stuff):-
