A recent conversation with a practicing LCH therapist reminded me of a discussion from a dozen or so years ago regarding post-hypnotic suggestions in the treatment of cigarette smoking. For example, an instruction from the therapist that following the stop-smoking treatment, the colour red would act as a reminder of not smoking.
While a number of therapists could see the benefit of incorporating such PHS, for the treatment which my own patients receive, it would be counterproductive. I have outlined below the reasons why such instructions would undermine the treatment which I provide.
